John Habraken studeerde in 1955 aan de TU Delft af in de architectuur. In 1967 was hij één van de grondleggers van de faculteit Bouwkunde van de toenmalige Technische Hogeschool Eindhoven, nu de TU/e, waar hij benoemd werd tot decaan. Acht jaar later verruilde hij Eindhoven voor het Amerikaanse Cambridge, waar hij onder meer jarenlang hoofd was van het architectuurinstituut van het MIT. Hoewel Habraken in 1989 met emeritaat ging, houdt hij zich nog altijd actief bezig met architectuur en stedenbouw. Hij geeft wereldwijd lezingen en schreef diverse publicaties, waaronder de boeken ‘De Dragers en de Mensen, het einde van de massawoningbouw’ (1961) en ‘The Structure of the Ordinary’ (1998). Ook ontving hij verschillende onderscheidingen, waaronder in 1996 de Oeuvre-prijs van de stichting Fonds voor beeldende kunsten, vormgeving en bouwkunst.De tekst van dit boek verscheen eerder (december 1966) in het tijdschrift Forum en stelt de geïndustrialiseerde woningbouw als antwoord op de [Nederlandse] woningnood in vraag.

Italian architect Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) has been, since the 1930s, at the center of a rich critical literature, marked by contributions from great scholars and architects. Multiple studies have identified the elements that characterize his work, such as the relationship with the techniques of composition, history, contexts and cities. Less known and more open to experimentation is the research on interior space, which pervades the entire span of his career. The other architectures referred to in this volume not only allude to deal with the original or minor aspects, perhaps not fully understood and sometimes overlooked, but also the possibility of adding investigative material. The aim is to better understand the process of Gardella’s compositional elaboration, starting from the projects for the interiors, through the stable exhibition arrangements or the ephemeral installations.

Theme of the book is the materiality of architecture in the design process. When does the idea for the materiality of an architecture arise? What role does the context and its character play? Does the typology have an effect on the material formulation of buildings? What relevance does the function have for the choice of a material? Is the aging ability of materials taken into account in the design? And can light be understood as material? These and other questions characterize the process of designing buildings for craftmans. The models and drawings of the designs alternate with the contributions by the architects Andreas Bründler, Piero Bruno and Thomas Kröger and are as readable in connection with them as they are independent of what is written.
